Annual Report-2010

Annual Report 2010 – Boylston Habitat for Humanity Project

Welcome to a new year 2011. We have much progress to report, and new challenges on our build of the Boylston Habitat House.

Family Selection -

On Wednesday, September 29: Lisa Davin and her 2 children; and Kristy and Domingo Mendoza and their 2 children were picked during our Family selection lottery.

Do you know that the families must also be a partner with Habitat – selected families are required to contribute 400 to 500 of sweat equity hours in the building of their homes, via participating in whatever they are able to do as part of the partnership.

Construction -

After a lengthy permitting and approval process taking up the first 3 quarters of 2010 we broke ground on site and started construction in OCT-2010.

A formal ground breaking ceremony was held on 6-NOV-2010 and:

The Fuller Foundation presented the Boylston Habitat Project a check for $50,000. Yes that is correct.
An extremely welcome and supporting contribution that has allowed us to progress very quickly with building by helping us pay for all the upfront construction costs.

During OCT, NOV, DEC 2010 – construction activities moved along very quickly.

  • See the Boylston Blog “Progress tab” for pictures of our progress.
  • In OCT we cleared the site, added the hay bales needed for erosion control measures, and dug the basement hole.
  • In NOV we poured the foundation and basement walls and floor, after which work moved along quickly with framing.
  • By the end of NOV we had the first level framed and work was starting on the second floor.
  • In DEC we finished the framing of the second level.  We framed the roof and added the roof plywood.  We also finished sheathing the exterior of the structure.
  • We managed to get all of this work done due to the help of many volunteers at the site. Some were arranged corporate sponsored build events and others were open build days where we always have our core group of volunteers helping on site.
  • We also want to thank Rich Reardon and his helpers for arranging and bringing drinks and snacks for the volunteers and getting lunches arranged and delivered when we have our corporate sponsored build days.
  • Stop by the site on a WED or SAT and take a look at our progress – stick around and help with the build

Fund Raising -

With the Fuller Foundation donation jump starting us – we have managed to stay in the black with our Income and Expenses so far on this project.

We have the support of a number of foundations and businesses have sponsored this project via donations and the enlisting of their employees to come and work on site during a construction day.

We would like to acknowledge and thank them for current and future support.

We have been fortunate to have a number of area businesses support our workers with lunch on many occasions.
We want to acknowledge and thank these businesses for their support and I can tell you the people working on site when we had these lunches have also expressed a big thank you to them.

  • Boylston Habitat for Humanity sends out a big THANK YOU to Verona Grill, for generously contributing a terrific lunch for our workers on Tuesday, November 16. Please join us in supporting this fine establishment.
For more info, visit Verona’s Grill, 81 Clinton Street (Rte 70), Shrewsbury, MA 01545
  • Boylston Habitat for Humanity has another big THANK YOU to the Other Place Pub, for their contribution of a very satisfying lunch for our volunteers on Wednesday, November 17. Please join us in supporting this great, local establishment.
For great food at great prices, visit: Other Place Pub, 71 Shrewsbury Street, Boylston, MA 01505

We had an EXTREMELY successful Spaghetti Supper Event this summer.  We were able to raising nearly $3000.

To finish up the year we sent out a year end appeal to all Boylston residents – Informing them about our project and asking for their support.

  • So far we have received almost $5400 by the end of DEC, with additional contributions still arriving.
  • Thank you to all who helped with the town-wide appeal.

The upcoming year will bring new activities as we continue our fund raising for this specific project.

Your help here is for us to construct and build a 2 family Habitat House – our budget for all of the costs associated with the build is $300,000.

  • While some of this cost will come from professionally donated services and materials – much of the cost will have to be paid for with real dollars.

So far we have raised about $82,000 and for that ALL of us involved with this project want to say a big Thank you.

How can you help?

We need some people to help in the Construction team - You would help the construction team make phone calls to businesses helping us get donated material for our build.  This has been one area we have not had as much success as we would have liked, mostly due to the poor economy.  But for every item we get donated – that is one less dollar we have do fund raising for.

Fund Raising - we need your help here – if you can make phone calls, have contacts with businesses, etc. – please contact us so that we can include you and you too can feel the satisfaction of helping on a worthwhile endeavor.
